Mr. Gavin Smith, Head of School at Boston Latin Academy, brings over a decade of leadership and teaching experience in public education. Appointed to his current role on July 1, 2021, Mr. Smith has dedicated his career to advancing educational equity and fostering student success within the Boston Public Schools system.
Previously, as the Assistant Head of School at Fenway High School, Mr. Smith spearheaded diversity workshops and professional development initiatives, focusing on data-informed strategies to enhance student outcomes and create equitable solutions. He played a crucial role in coordinating student support services, addressing mental health, and implementing social-emotional interventions. His collaborative efforts with teachers, administrators, and central office staff led to the redesign of school schedules to better meet academic needs.
Mr. Smith’s extensive experience includes serving as a Principal Fellow at Boston Latin School, a Science Teacher at the John D. O’Bryant School, and a Math and Science Teacher at both Beacon High School and City on a Hill Charter School. Throughout his career, he has consistently promoted standards-aligned curricula and utilized data to create equitable classroom environments.
Mr. Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Neuroscience and African American Studies from Northeastern University and a Master’s Degree in Teaching from Simmons University, with licensure in 5th—12th Biology, Sheltered English Immersion, and 5th—12th Principal Licensure. He is also an alumnus of the Lynch Leadership Academy at Boston College.
Residing in Boston, Mr. Smith is committed to joining his colleagues in fostering an environment of excellence and inclusivity at Boston Latin Academy. His passion for education and dedication to student well-being make him a valuable contributor to the Black Boy Joy Summit.
